0400Report

No political slant. No hype.

The straight read on what could disrupt your week, updated every morning around 0400 Central.

How the 0400 Report works

Every morning before 0400 Central, we sweep public news, government and grid-operator releases, weather and hazard services, and open forums for anything that could disrupt ordinary life in the US: the power grid, fuel, conflict overseas, cyberattacks, weather, banking, supply chains, food and health. Then we sort what's real from what's just loud.

No political slant. No hype. We started this because nearly every source out there leans hard left, leans hard right, or is trying to convince you the sky is falling. We'd rather just tell you what's happening and whether you need to do anything about it. Our standards spell out exactly what that means.

The threat level

The threat level is our own editorial assessment. It is not issued, endorsed or reviewed by any government agency, and it is not connected to any official alert system such as DHS advisories, FEMA or Emergency Alert System messages, or National Weather Service warnings.

The national page, each region and the world page each get a level, set by the same written rubric:

  • GreenNothing on the board above Watch. Normal life.
  • YellowOne or more Elevated items, but no broad effect people can feel yet.
  • OrangeA disruption measurably hitting daily life across several states or a large part of a region right now (a fuel or price shock, multi-state outages, a port or rail stoppage), or any single Critical item.
  • RedWidespread disruption underway: a multi-state grid failure, a national payments or communications outage, or two or more Critical items.

Under every level we say what would move it: what would drop it a step, and what would raise it. A scary headline isn't enough to move the level; real-world effects are. If something is quiet, we say so.

Board ratings

Each category on the board gets one of four ratings, which feed the level above:

  • quietNothing notable.
  • watchDeveloping and worth tracking, but no real-world effect yet.
  • elevatedReal effects on daily life somewhere now, or likely within days.
  • criticalSerious disruption underway now.

Regions

We split the country into six regions, each with its own level and board. National stories, like fuel prices or overseas conflict, live on the US page.

  • Northeast ME, NH, VT, MA, RI, CT, NY, NJ, PA, DE, MD, DC
  • Southeast VA, WV, NC, SC, GA, FL, AL, MS, TN, KY
  • Midwest OH, MI, IN, IL, WI, MN, IA, MO, ND, SD, NE, KS
  • South Central TX, OK, LA, AR
  • Mountain West MT, ID, WY, CO, UT, NV, AZ, NM
  • Pacific WA, OR, CA, AK, HI

The world page rates what's happening overseas by how much it spills over onto Americans: prices, energy, shipping, travel and security.

Our standards

These are the rules we hold ourselves to. If we ever break one, tell the SDO.

  • No political slant, in either direction. We report what people and governments said and did, with sources. We don't tell you who to blame or who to vote for, and we don't use loaded language to do it quietly.
  • No hype. A scary headline isn't news until it affects real life. We say "quiet" when it's quiet, and we don't round up to make a story bigger.
  • Sourced or it doesn't run. Every item links to where it came from, official and primary sources first. Political items always carry at least one wire or primary source.
  • No ads on report pages. Ever.
  • At most one sponsor per email, always clearly labeled.
  • Affiliate links stay on the Be Ready page, and only for gear we'd actually recommend.
  • Sponsors never touch the threat level or what we report.
  • No fear-selling sponsors. No "buy gold before the collapse," no doomsday bunkers, nothing that profits from scaring you.

Comms chatter

A lot of what spreads online is speculation dressed up as news. Each day we pick the claims getting the most traction and compare them with what reputable reporting and official sources actually say. Unconfirmed means unconfirmed.

How it's made

The report is compiled with the help of AI from public sources, then checked against those sources before it publishes. Every item links to where it came from so you can check it yourself. We favor official and primary sources and wire services, and political items always carry at least one wire or primary source. We summarize in our own words and never republish articles.

Corrections

When we get something wrong, we fix it on the page and note the correction. If you spot an error, email corrections@0400report.com with the date and the item, and a link to a better source if you have one.

What this is not

This is not official emergency guidance and not a substitute for local alerts. For warnings where you are, follow your local emergency officials, the National Weather Service, and Ready.gov. Nothing here is financial, legal or medical advice.

Affiliate links

Affiliate links appear only on the Be Ready page. If you buy through them we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It never affects the threat level or what we report.

Your email and privacy

If you join the email list, we store your email address and the date you signed up. That's it. Signing up adds you to the free daily email, one message a day, plus the occasional note about the 0400 Report. We never sell or share your address, and every email includes a one-click unsubscribe.

The site itself doesn't use tracking cookies or advertising trackers. Our host, Cloudflare, keeps basic anonymous traffic statistics.

Who's behind it

The 0400 Report is built and run by SBT Studios, LLC. We keep names off the site; hold us to our standards and our sources.
